Look North Grooming & Training Centre Ltd is a highly professional company. The original owner, Diana North, started Look North Dog Grooming in 1977 and Joanne Angus and Alison Thomas began working for her the same year, as Saturday girls. The business went on to expand into two businesses Look North Dog Grooming and Salon 2000 Training Centre – when Joanne became Diana’s partner in 1987 after training to become a professional groomer. Alison left the company in 1988 but returned as Joanne’s business partner in 1999, when Diana retired from the company, and now works in the office.
Due to the success of the business, Look North and Salon 2000 merged into a Limited Company in December 2004 forming Look North Grooming & Training Centre Ltd. Zoe Duffy originally came to Look North on work experience from school and then became a Saturday girl, moving on to be trained by Joanne as a professional groomer. Zoe continued to work at Look North for 7 years before leaving to teach grooming in a college. As Look North continued to flourish and demand for training increased, Zoe re-joined the team as the main tutor and has been at Look North ever since.
Joanne and Zoe have built up their experience and knowledge over the 38 year span and therefore know the grooming industry inside out. They have both achieved the highest City & Guilds grooming qualifications, hold teaching qualifications and were awarded the LCGI which is the highest grooming accolade. Both have taught at college as well as running their own successful businesses. Joanne and Zoe are also approved assessors for City & Guilds and are both examiners for the Pet Industry Federation and Zoe is also an Internal Verifier for City & Guilds. As such, they understand the desired current standard of grooming. This knowledge is passed onto our students, some of whom have gone on to win competitions within a few weeks of finishing their training and now run their own successful grooming businesses.
Joanne and Zoe have entered and won many competitions over the years both at home and abroad including America and Europe and have also bred and shown dogs to championship level.
Katie Bottomley and Naomi Edwards both trained at Look North in 2014/2015 and began working with us part time on successful completion of their City & Guilds Level 3 Introductory qualification. Within a couple of months they made our team complete by becoming full time members and are continuing to go from strength to strength with the quality of their grooming skills.
Abbie Thomas and Saffron Wright are also an important part of the team. Both are still in full time education, Abbie at College and Saffron in 6th Form at School, and work at Look North on a Saturday. Abbie works in the salon and Saffron in the office.
At Look North the training room is within the salon which enables the students to not only have the training environment they need, but also experience the hustle and bustle of day to day work. Students can observe communication between customer and groomer and see how the salon is run, which gives them an insight into both the responsibilities and requirements of running their own business.
Our training is designed to suit individual needs whether for an experienced groomer wanting specific breed training or a complete beginner requiring a more intensive course. We offer the City & Guilds Level 3 Introductory qualification which is included in the price of the 24 day course and to date all students have passed with Merit or Distinction. As we are a Premier Satellite Centre we also offer the Level 3 Diploma Unit 10 in Handstripping which is included in the 24 day course.
As well as the grooming and training centre, Joanne and Zoe, along with 4 other groomers, also began and run Groom Team England which was formed to represent England in the World Grooming Championships every 2 years. This involves holding seminars and workshops twice a year and also running the UKs largest grooming competition, Premier Groom, every August, to raise funds.
Joanne also wrote and marks an Open Learning course for groomers which is run via the Animal Care College, and along with the original owner of Look North, Diana North, and a veterinary assistant, Sue Dallas, she wrote the Grooming Manual for the Dog and Cat. This book has proved hugely popular with groomers and students alike.
We work with the local schools providing work experience on a continuous basis and as such, our health and safety policies are always up to date and reviewed regularly by health and safety officers.
Look North is registered with the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) and the MOD who can provide funding for training, depending on your circumstances. Please contact the appropriate department for further information or go to your local job centre for advice.
